Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

“When Sailors feel included, respected and empowered, they will be more ready to win wars, deter aggression and maintain freedom of the seas.”
- ADM Mike Gilday, Chief of Naval Operations (CNO)

Inclusion and diversity are one of the defining strengths of the U.S. Navy and the diversity of the Navy JAG Corps is a key component to maintaining a high state of readiness and accomplishing the JAG Corps mission.

Diversity encompasses more than race and gender – we seek to include diversity of thought, background, education, culture, and skills. The experiences and background that our members contribute foster innovative solutions to some of the Navy’s most challenging issues and enhance decision-making by providing a broader range of perspectives and interpretations.

Standing Advisory Council on Inclusion and Diversity

On July 1, 2020, CNO established Task Force One Navy reflecting the diversity of race, ethnicity, gender, age, and ranks across the Navy to identify barriers and correct actions to eliminate inequalities between groups of people. On November 16, 2020, the Judge Advocate General of the Navy established the Standing Advisory Council for Inclusion and Diversity. Stood up on January 5, 2021, the Council assists the JAG in identifying and addressing barriers of inequality, eliminating the effects of harmful bias and discrimination, and creating opportunities to achieve the desired end-state of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive JAG Community that recognizes, respects, and values everyone’s talents and skills. The Council does this by assessing, coordinating, and providing advice on JAG policies and programs to recruit, develop, and retain a unified legal team focused on the operational readiness of the Navy today and in the future. The Council may be reached via email at jag_sacid@navy.mil.
