Region Legal Service Office EURAFSWA Celebrates Law Day

May 19th, 2017

Region Legal Service Office Europe, Africa, and Southwest Asia (RLSO EURAFSWA) conducted a series of events in honor of Law Day on May 1, 2017. Law Day was first commemorated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, and it acknowledges how law profoundly influenced the foundation of our country, as well as its importance today. This year's theme was the Fourteenth Amendment, a landmark in American legal history. Law is involved in all aspects of military life, from the Uniform Code of Military Justice, to the international laws of armed conflict, to the everyday legal issues faced by Sailors and their families. Law Day presents a special opportunity to remind service members and their families of the legal resources available to them. The RLSO EURAFSWA Civil Law Department coordinated Law Day events across the area of responsibility. In Bahrain, I was interviewed by Armed Forces Network radio, where I discussed the Fourteenth Amendment and the services provided by the RLSO. In Rota, Lt. Emma Robertson and Legalman 2nd Class Jordan Lee presented on RLSO's services at a monthly ombudsman meeting. In Naples, Lt. Mark Jessup and Lt. j.g. Amy Zajac set up a booth at the Naval Support Activity Naples food court. They spoke about the Fourteenth Amendment, advertised the RLSO's services, booked legal assistance appointments, and handed out a number of preventative law materials. RLSO EURAFSWA is continually making efforts to expand its legal outreach, and this year's Law Day presented a wonderful opportunity to move those efforts forward!
